Venice, Florida -- Snake Island is an extremely popular island for boaters, located just east of the Venice jetties. The problem is that the island is shrinking.
That's why the taxpayers are shelling out $400,000 to stop the erosion and stabilize the island. The island was separated from Rattle Snake Island in 1967 by an Army Corp of Engineers dredging project. The island is also reported to be a Native American archaeological site.
The island will be closed starting next week during construction. It is supposed to last 60 days.
