Scientists want reports of whale shark sightings

VENICE, Florida (AP) - Scientists at Mote Marine Laboratory are asking the public to keep their eyes peeled for the world's largest fish.

A whale shark was spotted May 8 about 20 miles off the coast of Venice.

The fish can be up to 42 feet long and nearly 24 tons.

Deputies will use “saturation patrols” this weekend and over the Memorial Day holiday weekend to look for traffic offenses, motorists driving without a license, those with warrants and drunk drivers.

The North Sarasota Food Summit will engage the greater Newtown community in finding creative ways to expand access to healthy foods.

The Food Summit will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, 1845 34th St., Sarasota.

Florida city abuzz: Who among us won Powerball jackpot?

USA- Today --The Florida sun was shining a little bit brighter Sunday on an unidentified person who beat odds of 175 million-to-1 on a Powerball ticket worth $590.5 million, the largest jackpot in the game's history.

The lucky numbers in Saturday night's drawing were 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11. A mob of media and the curious amassed Sunday outside the Zephyr Commons Publix supermarket, in the Tampa suburb of Zephyrhills, where the winning ticket was sold.

Sarasota animal groups unite to save all the kittens

Sarasota, Florida -- It's kitten season and already hundreds of kittens have entered shelters and foster homes across Sarasota County. 

This year local humane organizations are committed to saving every life so they are asking the public to take kittens and pregnant cats to local rescue groups to alleviate the burden on Sarasota County Animal Services. 

Hundreds of people crowd around fight, one person is shot

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota Police Department is investigating a shooting that took place in front of Dredd Mart early Saturday morning. 

According to reports, a few hundred people gathered in front of the Dredd Mart Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way as fights broke out around 3:30 a.m on May 18. During the fight, an unknown assailant pulled out a gun and fired a round, striking 18-year-old Markeith Laws.  

Mote has new leader

Mote has new leader

Sarasota, Florida -- Mote Marine Laboratory has a new leader. Michael Crosby officially assumed the position of President and CEO this week.

Crosby joined Mote in 2010 as Senior Vice President for Research.

Mote's previous head, Kumar Mahadevan retired, but he will continue to assist the organization that he led for 27 years.
