Cleanup collects 3 tons of trash

Sarasota, Florida - Sarasota County is known for its beautiful beaches, parks and natural areas, but keeping all those destinations looking their best requires a huge effort.

Keep Sarasota County Beautiful (KSCB) has finished gathering data from the Great American Cleanup held on April 27, and the program coordinator is reporting that more than 680 volunteers picked up 6,371 pounds of trash, recyclables and other refuse at locations across the county.

Police: Teen jumped by two others at Siesta Key Beach

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has arrested two Sarasota teenagers for beating a third teen at Siesta Key Beach just after midnight on May 6.

Witnesses told deputies 18-year-old Devin Roman and a 15-year-old boy attacked 17-year-old Chance Prater after he tried to intervene when the two threatened to beat up his friend. 

According to reports, Roman and the 15-year-old punched Prater several times until he blacked out. Witnesses also said the 15-year-old ordered them not to help Prater.

Local schools present classic plays

Sarasota, Florida -- Support musical theater and local community performers by checking out some of the plays the schools of the Sarasota County School District will perform this May.  

On Thursday, may 16 100 Gocio Elementary students will present the musical play "Annie KIDS" at 7 p.m. It will be held in the school cafeteria, the public is welcome and admission is free.

Thursday, May 23, Students of Ashton Elementary will perform the musical play "Disney's Beauty and the Beast Junior." It will begin at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free.

Bay Guardian volunteers plant 3,500 plants at Perico Preserve

Sarasota, Florida  - A group of 49 adult and student Bay Guardian volunteers with the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program (SBEP) planted 3,500 Florida native plants at a shoreline area on Perico Preserve Saturday, May 4. The plants were donated by Manatee County Natural Resources and FWC Redfish Hatchery at Port Manatee. Other project partners included Around the Bend Nature Tours and Martha B. King Middle School in Bradenton. King Middle School was honored with an SBEP Blue Dolphin Award in 2012 to acknowledge the school's commitment to supporting local environmental projects.

County sponsors hurricane session for businesses

Sarasota, Florida - No one likes to think about it, but hurricanes are a reality in Florida.

Beach and other business owners can find out how to prepare during a special symposium this month. Emergency managers from both Sarasota and Charlotte counties will present information.

The symposium takes place Thursday, May 16th at the Englewood Chamber Community Room from 5 to 7 p.m.
