Food summit looks to help community expand access to health foods

Sarasota, Florida --People are more likely to choose to eat fresh, healthy foods as part of a healthy lifestyle when the surrounding neighborhood or community is designed to help people make the best choice, the easiest choice. The North Sarasota Food Summit will engage the greater Newtown community in finding creative ways to expand access to healthy foods.

The Food Summit will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, 1845 34th St., Sarasota.

Sarasota, Florida- Sarasota's mobile health unit has been suspended through the end of May. The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County is transitioning to electronic medical records at all its clinics. This process requires all nurses and staff members.

District to pilot after-school nutrition program

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County School District will pilot an after-school nutrition program at three Sarasota elementary schools beginning Wednesday, May 1. The program, sponsored by the Florida Department of Health in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will be offered at Alta Vista, Emma E. Booker and Gocio elementary schools, with serving times from 3:30-4:15 p.m. These schools have high percentages of students receiving free and reduced-price lunches.

Commission approves projects to help water quality

 Sarasota, Florida - The Sarasota County Commission has awarded construction contracts totaling $5.9 million for improvements to Beach Road drainage and Hudson Bayou water quality.

According to the county, the Beach Road project is designed to protect public health and safety by improving water quality at Siesta Beach. Plans call for improving the stormwater treatment system. The project includes the construction of a new one-acre detention pond. That project should be completed in November.

Sarasota, Florida -- Water Monkey is teaming up with Sarasota’s Florida International Triathlon for a fun weekend of running, swimming, biking and stand up paddle boarding. The 2nd annual Water Monkey Challenge stand up paddle board race is the newest addition to the FIT weekend. The stand up paddle board competition, 5K and triathlon will be held at Sarasota’s new Benderson Park Aquatic Center on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5, 2013.
