Sarasota County earns distinguished budget presentation award

Sarasota County, Florida -- The Sarasota County Office of Financial Management has once again received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award" for its fiscal year 2013 budget.

The award is the highest professional recognition in governmental budgeting and is presented by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). The county has won the award for 23 consecutive years. National recognition is based on how well a budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and a communications device, and is rated based on 27 specific criteria.

Sarasota, Florida-Now that school is out for the summer in Sarasota, students can use the time to brush up on their reading. Sarasota County libraries will begin their youth summer reading programs at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the North Port Library, 13800 North Tamiami Trail, North Port, with a performance by the Tampa Taiko Drums.

Construction on Sarasota's New Gulf Gate Library Begins in June

Sarasota, Florida -- The new Gulf Gate Library is one step closer to being built. The Sarasota County Commission approved a $7.7 million contract amendment for construction of the new library at the site of the existing library, 7112 Curtiss Ave., Sarasota.

The new library will be a two story building measuring 25,800 square-feet. Construction should start in June and be completed by the summer of 2014.

The library has been temporarily relocated to the southern end of the Westfield Sarasota Square Mall, 8201 S. Tamiami Trail.

Sarasota, Florida- Most Sarasota County government offices including libraries, recreation centers and transit services will be closed Monday, May 27, to observe the national Memorial Day Holiday.

Payne Park Tennis Center will be open from 7:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. and the Arlington Park Recreation Center will be from noon until 5 p.m.

Sarasota County Area Transit will not operate on Memorial Day.

Trash pick up along with yard waste and recyclables will remain on the regular pick up schedule.

Lifeguard hours extended for holiday weekend

Sarasota, Florida - It is definitely beach weather and lifeguards will have longer hours this holiday weekend.

Starting Saturday, May 25th, guarded beaches in Sarasota County will be staffed from 10 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. daily. The extended hours will run through Memorial Day weekend.

Sarasota County's guard beaches are Lido Beach, Siesta Beach, Nokomis Beach, North Jetty Beach, Venice Beach and Manasota Beach

County sponsors hurricane session for businesses

Sarasota, Florida - No one likes to think about it, but hurricanes are a reality in Florida.

Beach and other business owners can find out how to prepare during a special symposium this month. Emergency managers from both Sarasota and Charlotte counties will present information.

The symposium takes place Thursday, May 16th at the Englewood Chamber Community Room from 5 to 7 p.m.
