Sarasota promotes webinars on hurricane season safety

Sarasota, Florida -- Hurricane season is less than three months away and Sarasota County Emergency Management officials say this is the time to learn how to protect your family and property.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management is offering webinars through June 25 with helpful advice. 

The website also contains a Homeowners' Wind Mitigation booklet that explains techniques to avoid wind damage.

Sarasota, Florida -- With the approach of the hurricane season on June 1, the Florida Division of Emergency Management and Florida's Foundation are offering a series of webinars on what homeowners can do to prepare their homes to withstand high winds.

The webinars are offered through June 25. A list of times and dates is available on the Florida's Foundation website at www.floridasfoundation.org.

High fire danger in Sarasota County

North Port, Florida -- The City of North Port reports a "Red Flag Warning" has been issued for Southwest Florida. This means that this area is experiencing severe drought conditions, low humidity and moderate to gusty winds.

On the Keetch-Byrum Index, a scale of wildfire danger from zero (no danger) to 800 (extreme danger), Sarasota County and the City of North Port are in the 550 - 599 range.

Damage assessments under way in wake of Tropical Storm Isaac

Sarasota County, Florida -- County crews are conducting damage assessments and response and relief operations today in the wake of Tropical Storm Isaac.

So far, county creeks and rivers are saturated and there are flood warnings in effect for the Myakka River at Myakka State Park. There also is active flooding along River Road at the Rambler's Rest RV Resort in Venice.

Storm tides and wave action along coastal areas is causing beach erosion and damage to adjacent roads. Manasota Beach Road in the middle of Manasota Key is flooded.

Longboat Key, Florida - The Town of Longboat Key is gearing up for possible impacts from Tropical Storm Isaac.

FEMA opens disaster recovery center in Sarasota County

Venice, Florida -- A disaster recovery center is open in Sarasota County to help those whose homes or businesses were affected by Tropical Storm Debby. The center is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Representatives from the Florida Division of Emergency Management, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Small Business Administration and other agencies will be at the center to explain disaster assistance programs and help survivors apply for aid.

Tallahassee, Florida -- Tropical Storm Debby survivors in Citrus, Gilchrist, Lafayette, Polk and Sarasota counties in Florida can now apply for federal disaster assistance.
